Lake Erie Islands Historical Society & Museum

Originally the Put-in-Bay Centennial Celebration Committee (PIBCCC) established in 1975, this organization was renamed the Lake Erie Islands Historical Society in 1985 when a group of dedicated island residents formed to make their vision of an island museum a reality. The first museum opened in 1987 at the historic Put-in-Bay Bottling Works building. A new 6,000 square foot museum building with a research library and archive was opened in 1998. The LEIHS's mission is to educate about Lake Erie Islands history, and to protect and preserve island history for future generations. WE offer six levels of membership, and anyone interested is invited to join. The museum hosts events for members, fundraising events open to everyone, history programs, and collaborative events with island partners. Open daily in the summer months and weekends in the spring and fall, the Lake Erie Islands Historical Society museum welcomes school groups, with advance notice please, to explore the history and mystery of the Lake Erie Islands and island life.

Beginning today for the next 3 days, the Historical Society is having a sale on artifacts from the Crescent Tavern, including decorative molding, corbels, sold wood doors and original windows. These items have been stored in the “Boat Building,” which was home to the original museum until 1998 when the current museum building was completed. We’ve got some exciting plans for the building next season.

Webster Perit Huntington served as Secretary General of the Perry’s Victory Inter-State Board of the Perry’s Victory Centennial Commission. Born in Columbus in 1865, he was instrumental in the successful pursuit of a memorial at Put-in-Bay to commemorate the victory of Oliver Hazard Perry in the Battle of Lake Erie on September 10, 1813. Huntington, a member of the Huntington Bank family, was a published writer who also compiled "The Perry's Victory Memorial; A History of Its Origin, Construction and Completion in Commemoration of the Victory of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry in the Battle of Lake Erie and the Northwestern Campaign of General William Henry Harrison in the War of 1812." Huntington is shown here at the July 4, 1913, Centennial Celebration at the laying of the cornerstone of the Perry’s Victory Memorial. Huntington is holding a time capsule that was inserted in the cornerstone. This canvas is a part of a collection of 7 large Otto Herbster prints from the July 4, 1913, Centennial Celebration, that will be displayed at Art in the Park on Saturday, September 12 at the Museum booth. They originally were printed by LEIHS’s Board Member Maggie Beckford for the art display at the Rhodes Center in Columbus during the 2013 Bicentennial Art Show and are part of her private collection. Beckford retires this month from the board after 25 years of service, 20 (2004 – 24) of those as the museum’s president.
