Lake Erie Islands Historical Society & Museum

Originally the Put-in-Bay Centennial Celebration Committee (PIBCCC) established in 1975, this organization was renamed the Lake Erie Islands Historical Society in 1985 when a group of dedicated island residents formed to make their vision of an island museum a reality. The first museum opened in 1987 at the historic Put-in-Bay Bottling Works building. A new 6,000 square foot museum building with a research library and archive was opened in 1998. The LEIHS's mission is to educate about Lake Erie Islands history, and to protect and preserve island history for future generations. WE offer six levels of membership, and anyone interested is invited to join. The museum hosts events for members, fundraising events open to everyone, history programs, and collaborative events with island partners. Open daily in the summer months and weekends in the spring and fall, the Lake Erie Islands Historical Society museum welcomes school groups, with advance notice please, to explore the history and mystery of the Lake Erie Islands and island life.

So many things to see and do on the island. We encourage visitors to do a little "pre-visit" research on visitputinbay.com (PIB Chamber of Commerce) millerferry.com (Miller Ferry to Put-in-Bay and Middle Bass Island), pevi.gov (Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial), Heineman Winery and Crystal Cave and other attraction-related venues. Thank you for the mention, Miller Ferry to Put-in-Bay and Middle Bass Island!

LEIHS is asking for volunteers to help with keeping up the Museum grounds this season. Roger Parker got us off to a great start, but the job is really too big for just one person. We need help with pulling weeds, maybe a little weed whacking. If you or someone you know might have a few free hours to land a hand it would be very much appreciated.

Board members and volunteers have been hard at work reorganizing the Museum displays, so the downstairs is accessible to everyone, and there's more space for museum functions. Thanks to all our volunteers. Stop by and check out our new space.

LEIHS's popular Heritage Resale Shop is sending out an SOS asking ladies to inventory their jewelry boxes for pieces they may no longer wear or need. Costume jewelry is a hot seller at the Put-in-Bay's thrifting paradise and there is always a need. June says the shop will accept gold and/or silver pieces but really could use donations of costume jewelry.
