The High
Family of Middle Bass
George
McCormick High was the son of Hosea
High, an Indian agent for the State
of Ohio, and Mary McCormick,
daughter of George McCormick, who
built the first U.S. Capital in
Washington, later burned by the
British during the War of 1812.
George High was a merchant in Cincinnati and retired to Middle Bass
about 1870 to raise grapes and deal
in real estate.
Daughter,
Fannie, married Curtis Gladding and
they moved to Hartford, Connecticut.
George High Jr. married local girl,
Caroline Kubach, and had one child,
Allene High Seese.
George and Caroline divorced and George moved to Indianapolis.
Caroline Kubach High married Wilford
Boulware and they moved to Montana.
Hosea and his sister, Carrie High, stayed on the Middle Bass family
homestead. Carrie High was the
Middle Bass
Sunday
School teacher for years.
Recently the Seese Family generously donated an enormous collection
of High Family letters, photographs,
china and silver to our museum.
The letters, written from Carrie High on Middle Bass to Allene High
Seese, give an amazing glimpse into
island life past.
