Jose
de Rivera met young Valentine
Doller (rhymes with solar) in
Sandusky, Ohio, where Doller was
working as a store clerk. De
Rivera encouraged Doller to move
to Put-in-Bay and open the first
dry goods store, by offering him
prime real estate on the
waterfront.
Doller married Catherine Haas
in 1859 in Sandusky and they
moved to the island. They moved
into a frame building adjacent
to the saw mill that they
eventually enlarged into the
Italianate Villa that still
stands today.
Valentine
Doller opened his business on
the corner of Bay View and
Catawba Avenues with a store,
saloon and restaurant. His
Doller Building was the site of
the island telegraph office and
the first post office with
himself as postmaster.
He also owned the waterfront
dock (now the Boardwalk) which
handled various ships, freight
and he had a water taxi business
to the other islands. Doller had
vineyards and established the
wine co-op. He was instrumental
in starting the ice industry on
Peach Point. He bought and
donated the land for the United
States Fish Hatchery, also on
Peach Point.
After
the first Put-in-Bay House
burned, Valentine Doller bought
the land and built a second
Put-in-Bay House. He was the
Mayor of Put-in-Bay from 1880 to
1889
His brother, Christopher
Doller, moved to Put-in-Bay as
the island shoemaker. His home
and store were in the building
now used as the Put-in-Bay
Trading Co. retail shop.
Another brother, John Doller,
also moved to Put-in-Bay and
opened a rooming house. This
business still exists today as
the Ashley’s Island House Bed
and Breakfast.
